group of academics, human rights experts condemn the ambush and killing of members Caravan of Peace which was headed for San Juan Copala and require state authorities to clarify the grave events.
April 29, 2010. For scholars undersigned have been informed through the press and various reports produced by civil society organizations, which on Tuesday April 27 was attacked by an armed group, a caravan of peace made by social organizations and human rights, journalists and international observers. As a result of such action has been confirmed killed Alberta Darling Beatriz Trujillo, director of Center for Community Support Working Together (CACTUS AC) and Jyri Jaakkola, observer Finnish international. In addition, several people were injured.
In comparison, those who subscribe below express our greatest repudiation of these events that are intolerable within the rule of law. Also express our deep concern at the rising climate of violence that prevails in the region due to the proliferation of armed civilian groups, and demand that the responsible authorities:
a) To ensure the full integrity of family members, human rights defenders and society civil found in the area to demand clarification of the facts and end the siege of San Juan Copala;
b) Undertake research from to punish those responsible;
c) repair the violated rights of victims of these events;
d) Take the necessary steps to end violence in the area, including the disarmament of armed groups;
e ) Open channels of dialogue necessary to decrease the tension in the region, respecting the rights to autonomy and self-determination of indigenous peoples recognized in the Constitution and international treaties signed and ratified by Mexico.
